Indian National Parks, and their Rarest Species!
India is a home to some of the rarest and wonderful animals. With more than 500 Wildlife Sanctuaries and around 100 National Parks, the country nurtures a charismatic mixture of an enormous number of endangered and wild animals. But now, many animals are on the verge of extinction due to harsh human interferences and changing and un-adjustable climatic conditions.
In such a situation, the virid National Parks of India harbour some of the rarest wildlife species. Here, in this article, is a list of National Parks in India having some endangered and rare species.
4 National Parks of India
• Kaziranga National Park:
Kaziranga National Park is situated in Assam in Golaghat and Nagaon districts. This World Heritage Site is home to the two-third population of World’s Great One-Horned Rhinoceroses, listed as one of the vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and remains the key reserve for these species.
Moreover, it was also declared a Tiger Reserve because of the highest density of tigers present in the park among the protected areas in the world.
• Eravikulam National Park:
The first National Park of Kerala, Eravikulam National Park, is located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of the state. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a home to more than 20 species of mammals including NilgiriTahr. It is considered as the state animal of Tamil Nadu. This endangered mountain ungulate has been recorded as the largest surviving population, estimated at more than 700 individuals in the National Park.
Besides, some little-known animals such as Nilgirilangur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, small clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky palm squirrel are also found in the park.
• Silent Valley National Park:
Located in the Nilgiri hills, within the Palakkad District of Kerala, the Silent Valley National Park nurtures some rare species of flora and fauna. The National park is home to the largest population of lion-tailed macaques, an endangered species of primate with only around 2,900 species.
The Lion Tailed Macaque is an old-world monkey and is so well adapted to its forest home that it simply cannot adjust to the new habitats being created by human intrusion. Public controversy over their habitat led to the establishment of Silent Valley National Park.
• Hemis National Park:
Hemis National Park, also known as Hemis High Altitude National Park, is located in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the only national park in India north of the Himalayas and the largest notified protected area in India. It harbours numerous endangered species including the snow leopard. Profoundly considered the best place to see the snow leopard, it is home to a viable breeding population of about 200 snow leopards.
Besides, it is also a home to many other animals such as the Tibetan Wolf, the Eurasian brown bear, and the red fox are also present in National Park.
